U.S. Government helps to improve street lightning in southern Furkat village
Bishkek, April 17 / Kabar /. The U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will award an $86,908 grant to improve street light services in Furkat village of Kara-Suu district of Osh Oblast. The press service of the US Embassy in Bishkek reports.
Darkened streets contribute negatively to public security and impede recovery efforts following the June 2010 violence, which severely damaged residences, businesses, and schools in Furkat village. Administered through USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives (USAID/OTI), this activity will benefit approximately 3,500 residents by procuring over 100 street light poles and lamps to be installed along 2.6 kilometers of road. The local government of Shark will contribute by providing the required approvals and permits, and allocating approximately $5,556 annually to maintain the service. It will also coordinate with the local Electricity Department (RES) to provide specialized labor and equipment, and supervise the installation works.
This project complements the ongoing joint initiative with the Osh city government to improve street lighting along 51.1 km of road. It is one of many assistance projects supported by the American people through USAID.
