Bishkek, May 25 / Kabar /. On May 26, 2012, the U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will present a $40,729 grant to the Nookat municipal government office to improve street lighting in Nookat city. The grant signing event will be held in Nookat city, District Administration Office, Osh province at 11:45 a.m.
Nisha Biswal, USAID Assistant Administrator for Asia and the Near East, and Carey Gordon, USAID Kyrgyz Republic Country Representative, will participate in the signing ceremony.
USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) will support the procurement of 30 street light poles and 160 lamps for the rehabilitation of lights over 5 kilometers of central city streets. The Nookat municipal government will contribute to this activity by installing the street light poles and lamps. This activity will improve a crucial public service and contribute to a sense of safety among Nookat residents.
In 2011, USAID and Jalal-Abad municipal authorities completed a similar project in Jalal-Abad city. As a result, Jalal-Abad registered a 10-15% reduction in night-time crime according to the municipal Ministry of Interior. Because business were able to extend their working hours, the Mayor’s Office reported a 33% increase in monthly tax revenues compared with the previous year.
