UNHCR rendered technical assistance to the State Registration Service

Bishkek, May 8 / Kabar /. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) handed technical assistance to the State Registration Service’s Civil Status Registration and Passports offices (ZAGs). Technical assistance included 16 computers, printers, copy and fax machines. In addition, UNHCR provided financial support to SRS to install a VPN L2 internet channel which enables the use of electronic processing of documentation including that related to issuance of IDs and other types of documentation to the population.

In 2011-2012 UNHCR provided assistance to the State Registration Service for more than 5 million som.

Since fighting statelessness is one of UNHCR’s main objective in Kyrgyzstan and last UNHCR findings revealed around 32,000 stateless in the country the Agency trusts that this provided equipment will enable staff of the SRS to provide prompt services to population on obtaining required documents, processing citizenship applications and issuing passports to stateless people.  

In 2011 UNHCR supported two mobile groups consisted of Passport Service representatives and NGO lawyers in Osh and Jalal-Abad. The groups offered free consultations on documents issues in various districts of the South. Also, UNHCR provided the SRS with the possibility to hire 27 more staff members to enhance its capacity. These activities aimed to improve the quality of SRS services and acceleration of the process on documents’ issuance.

For many years UNHCR actively cooperates with the State Registration Service to assist refugees, stateless people and internally displaced people.
